Not to sound like I am talking down to you, but it is basically marketing to a targeted area or type of people. If you are selling diapers do you want to market towards males 18-35, probably not the best group. So companies would tend to shy away from TV shows that cater to this demographic. It is more or less really knowing your product and who it could best service, and who would be willing to pay for it. That is why you will not see a tampon commercial during the Superbowl or a Monster truck rally commercial during The Bachelor. Know your audience, tailor your commercial to them, and get their attention.

I named my business “On Target Marketing” because I believe in this concept so strongly. Target marketing means you find the right person at the right stage in life with the right amount of money to buy your product, as well as the customer who needs and wants your product. By doing this, you are targeting in on the best prospective customers, people who need and can afford what you are selling.

For example, to advertise an upscale gourmet internet based cooking club, you want to find people who are:
A. Very Interested in learning Gourmet Cooking
B. Have high end $50K plus kitchen appliances
C. Have the time and money to indulge in this
D. Who like to entertain frequently
E. Who have a DSL connection.

Amazingly enough, you can do a list search and get very detailed and specific information about potential clients to market to. (You know those little warranty cards you fill in when you get an appliance? All that information goes into marketing databases.

Then you direct your advertising to those people. If you find a huge concentration in one geographic area, you can either do direct mail, billboards, or cooking events in the malls they likely frequent.

With target marketing, you aren’t just placing general ads in everyday newspapers and hoping to catch a few eyes. You are thinking like the customer, thinking of what they read, where they shop, and how you can become part of their reality with a very targeted, planned campaign.
